Frequently Asked Questions

Each weekend at the stand we hear a variety of frequently asked questions ranging from the regular to the bizarre  ("Do you get these shrimp out of the river?") We thought it would be a good idea to answer some of these FAQs on the blog for reference, especially for our newbie customers. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have in the comments section!

What is Jumbo Seafood?

Jumbo Seafood is a family owned and operated small business that specializes in providing the tri-state area (WV, VA, MD) with the freshest seafood around! We've been in business for fourteen great years and counting!

Where is Jumbo Seafood?

Jumbo Seafood is located “between the bridges” on Rt. 340 at the Tri-State Exxon Station. (just follow the neon signs!) It is important to note that this is our only location, and we are not affiliated with any other local seafood suppliers.

What are Jumbo Seafood’s hours of operation?

  • Friday: 10am -7pm
  • Saturday: 10am -7pm
  • Sunday: 10am – sell out (on Sundays, we close the stand whenever we are sold out of product, which could be anywhere from 2pm – 7pm depending on how busy we’ve been prior to Sunday)

When does Jumbo Seafood open?

As stated above, we are only open on the weekends – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Our season runs from April through December, and we are open rain or shine.

What types of seafood does Jumbo Seafood sell?

We sell a wide variety of seafood, from shrimp to scallops. We are also able to order specialty seafood such as octopus, crawfish, and conch. Below is a listing of our usual weekend offerings:

  • 2-4 different sizes of shrimp
  • dry-sack, non-processed sea scallops
  • lump crabmeat (fresh, non-pasteurized, hand-picked Atlantic blue crab from Alabama)
  • jumbo lump crabmeat ( " " )
  • 3-6 different types of fish
  • soft shell crabs (cleaned, WHALES)
  • select oysters in the pint jar (Rose Bay Oyster Companty, North Carolina)
  • We also carry seasonal seafood items such as oysters in the shell and clams.

What types of fish does Jumbo Seafood carry?

Our selection of fish varies from week to week depending on the market catch and price, so please be sure to either call us or check this website if you’re interested in something specific! Below is a listing of different fish that we carry:

  •  yellowfin tuna
  • swordfish
  • flounder
  • salmon
  • cod
  • haddock
  • wahoo
  • grouper
  • tilapia
  • red snapper
  • halibut

All of our fish is either steaked or filleted, but on occasion we do carry whole fish (eyeballs and all!) Also, all of our fish is FRESH, never frozen.

Does Jumbo Seafood carry hard shell crabs?

Typically we only do hard shell crabs by special order; however, there are some weekends when we have a limited number of steamed, hard shell crabs for sale by the dozen.

What if I want to place a special order/ high volume order?

If you are interested in placing an order, we suggest that you call us by Tuesday or Wednesday of the week in which you want your items. Our contact information is as follows:

Home Phone: (304) 728-0930  - ask for Ali James or Les Bowman.

If no one is available to answer your call, please leave your name and number and a brief message regarding your inquiry or order.

What methods of payment does Jumbo Seafood accept?

We currently accept cash and personal checks (with proper ID & phone/driver's license number). We do not have the capability to accept credit or debit cards, but there is an ATM machine located inside the Exxon station for your convenience.

Does Jumbo Seafood carry any items other than seafood?

Occasionally we carry seasonal produce, fresh-cut flower bouquets, honey, and homemade beeswax candles from Hidden Creek Apiary in Hillsboro, Virginia. Throughout our season we also carry a variety of mushrooms, including morels (only during their short season) and shiitakes.

Where do Jumbo Seafood’s products come from?

Most of our seafood comes from North Carolina, but our supplier buys from small, independent day boats from all over the Eastern and Southern Coasts. For instance, our scallops are from Massachusetts, and our crab meat is from Alabama.

How does Jumbo Seafood retrieve their product?

All of our items are shipped to us via refrigerated truck, and we pick it up at a holding company called Sea-Cap outside of Baltimore, Maryland early Friday morning.

How does Jumbo Seafood’s product differ from the seafood found in a grocery store?

Jumbo Seafood's product differs from the seafood found in most grocery stores because our product is WILD CAUGHT, FRESH (not frozen & no preservatives added), NOT IMPORTED. Most shrimp, fish, etc. found at large grocery stores are farm raised and imported from places such as Indonesia and Taiwan. Also, grocery stores frequently use preservatives  or freeze their seafood items to extend their shelf life.

Good News for Sunday Shoppers

Hello, All!
Just wanted to give you a quick update on our inventory!

We still have plenty of fish for tomorrow - yellowfin tuna, swordfish, sockeye salmon, and cod!

We've had a bit of weird weekend due to all the road work on Rt. 340, but thankfully it's OVER (at least for this weekend!) and traffic has subsided.

Also, because of this "weird weekend," we have quite a bit of crab meat left for tomorrow which can only mean one thing . . . SALE!

Normally our Jumbo Lump crab meat sells for $26/lb. and our Lump crab meat sells for $18/lb. (It's all fresh, hand picked, non-pasteurized blue crab!)

Tomorrow we will be selling the Jumbo Lump at 2 lbs. for $50 and the Lump at 2 lbs. for $34.

Mention that you visited the website and read this blog entry, and you'll get 2 lbs. of Lump crab meat for $30! Don't be shy! We love our readers & customers!

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Jumbo Seafood World Headquarters

We thought it'd be a good idea to post a few pictures of our "storefront," especially for those who are unfamiliar with our business. I apologize for the picture quality. I'm not as familiar with my camera as I should be, so the pictures are a bit washed out. Not to worry, better ones will be posted after I read through my owner's manual! Enjoy.

The Perks of Being a Fish Monger

Aside from being able to eat fresh, delicious seafood each weekend, there are more than a few perks to working at Jumbo Seafood. I especially enjoy getting to chat with our regular customers. This weekend, Tony, a loyal and lovable customer, shared with us something that absolutely made me squee! (Yes, "squee"...not "squeal." I define a "squee" as the noise one makes when encountering something too adorable for words. You'll understand when you peek at the pictures!)

Tony had recently lost his dog of fifteen years, so he decided to visit a few of the local animal shelters to find himself a furry new friend, and boy, did he ever. Behold!

Isn't he just presh? I'm obsessed with puppies, so this made my day. This baby boy came from the Berkeley County Animal Shelter (I think) and he's a "West Virginia terrier."

Betcha can't guess this cutie's name! Here are a few hints: "Wheel of Fortune!" and "casino" and "bingo." Leave your guess in the comments! First person to guess correctly will get a special treat courtesy of Jumbo Seafood!

Quick and Easy Marinades for Fish

(fresh yellowfin tuna steaks)

Because its probably our most popular product (aside from the shrimp), Mom and I are always asked for our favorite fish recipes. The truth is that with a fresh product, very few ingredients are needed because the flavor of the fish stands alone. However, there are a few marinades that we recommend when asked. The best part is that they're quick and easy - AND -  most people already have the  ingredients in their refrigerators & pantries. No trip to the grocery store necessary! Here we go...

  • Italian salad dressing (a great all-purpose marinade!)
  • a mixture of orange juice, low-sodium soy sauce, honey, and fresh grated ginger (especially tasty on tuna!)
  • dijon mustard, olive oil, and lime or lemon juice (a delicious marinade borrowed from the South Beach Diet cookbook. it keeps fish exceptionally moist!)
  • ranch dressing and low-sodium soy sauce (I know this sounds like a strange combination, but my Mom swears by this marinade for her grilled tuna)
  • dijon mustard topped with coarse sea salt and brown sugar (this is my grandmother's favorite recipe to use on salmon when cooking it on the George Foreman Grill)
  • green tabasco sauce and lime juice (one of my favorites for sword fish and grouper!)
There are no real measurements that you need to know for any of these suggestions. Just keep mixing the ingredients until you get the taste you desire, and be sure you make/use enough marinade to coat both sides of the fish.

So, dear readers and customers - do you have any favorite fish marinades you'd like to suggest? Share them in the comments! Thanks for another great weekend!
