Frequently Asked Questions

Each weekend at the stand we hear a variety of frequently asked questions ranging from the regular to the bizarre  ("Do you get these shrimp out of the river?") We thought it would be a good idea to answer some of these FAQs on the blog for reference, especially for our newbie customers. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have in the comments section!

What is Jumbo Seafood?

Jumbo Seafood is a family owned and operated small business that specializes in providing the tri-state area (WV, VA, MD) with the freshest seafood around! We've been in business for fourteen great years and counting!

Where is Jumbo Seafood?

Jumbo Seafood is located “between the bridges” on Rt. 340 at the Tri-State Exxon Station. (just follow the neon signs!) It is important to note that this is our only location, and we are not affiliated with any other local seafood suppliers.

What are Jumbo Seafood’s hours of operation?

  • Friday: 10am -7pm
  • Saturday: 10am -7pm
  • Sunday: 10am – sell out (on Sundays, we close the stand whenever we are sold out of product, which could be anywhere from 2pm – 7pm depending on how busy we’ve been prior to Sunday)

When does Jumbo Seafood open?

As stated above, we are only open on the weekends – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Our season runs from April through December, and we are open rain or shine.

What types of seafood does Jumbo Seafood sell?

We sell a wide variety of seafood, from shrimp to scallops. We are also able to order specialty seafood such as octopus, crawfish, and conch. Below is a listing of our usual weekend offerings:

  • 2-4 different sizes of shrimp
  • dry-sack, non-processed sea scallops
  • lump crabmeat (fresh, non-pasteurized, hand-picked Atlantic blue crab from Alabama)
  • jumbo lump crabmeat ( " " )
  • 3-6 different types of fish
  • soft shell crabs (cleaned, WHALES)
  • select oysters in the pint jar (Rose Bay Oyster Companty, North Carolina)
  • We also carry seasonal seafood items such as oysters in the shell and clams.

What types of fish does Jumbo Seafood carry?

Our selection of fish varies from week to week depending on the market catch and price, so please be sure to either call us or check this website if you’re interested in something specific! Below is a listing of different fish that we carry:

  •  yellowfin tuna
  • swordfish
  • flounder
  • salmon
  • cod
  • haddock
  • wahoo
  • grouper
  • tilapia
  • red snapper

All of our fish is either steaked or filleted, but on occasion we do carry whole fish (eyeballs and all!) Also, all of our fish is FRESH, never frozen.

Does Jumbo Seafood carry hard shell crabs?

Typically we only do hard shell crabs by special order; however, there are some weekends when we have a limited number of steamed, hard shell crabs for sale by the dozen.

What if I want to place a special order/ high volume order?

If you are interested in placing an order, we suggest that you call us by Tuesday or Wednesday of the week in which you want your items. Our contact information is as follows:

Home Phone: (304) 728-0930  - ask for Ali James or Les Bowman.

If no one is available to answer your call, please leave your name and number and a brief message regarding your inquiry or order.

What methods of payment does Jumbo Seafood accept?

We currently accept cash and personal checks (with proper ID & phone/driver's license number). We do not have the capability to accept credit or debit cards, but there is an ATM machine located inside the Exxon station for your convenience.

Does Jumbo Seafood carry any items other than seafood?

Occasionally we carry seasonal produce, fresh-cut flower bouquets, honey, and homemade beeswax candles from Hidden Creek Apiary in Hillsboro, Virginia. Throughout our season we also carry a variety of mushrooms, including morels (only during their short season) and shiitakes.

Where do Jumbo Seafood’s products come from?

Most of our seafood comes from North Carolina, but our supplier buys from small, independent day boats from all over the Eastern and Southern Coasts. For instance, our scallops are from Massachusetts, and our crab meat is from Alabama.

How does Jumbo Seafood retrieve their product?

All of our items are shipped to us via refrigerated truck, and we pick it up at a holding company called Sea-Cap outside of Baltimore, Maryland early Friday morning.

How does Jumbo Seafood’s product differ from the seafood found in a grocery store?

Jumbo Seafood's product differs from the seafood found in most grocery stores because our product is WILD CAUGHT, FRESH (not frozen & no preservatives added), NOT IMPORTED. Most shrimp, fish, etc. found at large grocery stores are farm raised and imported from places such as Indonesia and Taiwan. Also, grocery stores frequently use preservatives  or freeze their seafood items to extend their shelf life.
